If there was an Oscar for the world’s worst attempt at a Geordie accent, Greg Bryan would win.

The actor was slammed for his incomprehensible Geordie accent as he played Alistair Gascoyne - a character from Newcastle - in US crime drama, Castle.

A clip from an episode of the ABC show opens with an incomprehensible sentence from Bryan who appears to muddle several dialects as he gets into character.

Even Bryan's co-stars struggle to decipher his sentences with one asking: “If this guy is from England, why doesn’t he speak English?”

Another character attempts to explain the accent before offering her translation skills, saying: “He’s a Geordie from Newcastle. Although technically English, the language has evolved to include a certain unique vocabulary and grammatical structure. I can translate.”

People were quick to criticise the accent with some deeming it “terrible” while others took offence.

One YouTube user wrote: “As someone from Newcastle this is literally the worst attempt I have ever heard. Sounds like an Irishman using Geordie dialect.”

Another posted: “As someone living in Newcastle I'm just as confused as they are at what he's trying to say.”

One user compared the actor to Crazy Dave from Plants V Zombies while another questioned whether or not it is a “meta joke” writing: “Is this is a meta joke, or are the people behind the show f*****g t***s?”

Another simply posted: “Wye-aye? Wye-nope.”
