Wayne Rooney told of his delight today after wife Coleen gave birth to a boy but immediately caused confusion over his choice of name.

The England striker broke the news to his six million followers on Twitter and revealed they had decided to call their second son, Klay. One baby names website claimed it means “he who is immortal” and there was also speculation that boxing fan Rooney had named him after Cassius Clay, who later became Muhammad Ali.

Some on Twitter suggested that the Manchester United player had misspelt the name Clay, while others speculated the Rooneys were following reality show the Kardashians by giving their children names starting with K. Their first son is called Kai, now aged three.

Shortly before 4am, Rooney, 27, tweeted: “Our Beautiful Son Klay Anthony Rooney was born at 2.11am, Weighing 7Ib 11.1/2 oz. Both Klay and Coleen are fine... We’re all delighted!!”

There are only a handful of Klays in the UK. One of them, assistant quantity surveyor Klay Andrews, 19, from east London, said today: “My mum and dad got the name from cowboy films. There were quite a few Clays or Claytons in the Westerns and my parents gave the name a twist so it started with a K.

“It causes quite of a lot of confusion when I’m on the phone — people think I’m called Craig — but all in all I think it’s a good name.” Rooney missed United’s last game of the season on Sunday after Coleen, 27, went into labour late on Saturday night. Tweeting shortly after giving birth, she wrote: “At 2.11am our Beautiful Son .... Klay Anthony Rooney entered the world... We’re all so happy.”
