Channel 4 was celebrating today after its drama Southcliffe and comedy The IT Crowd received four nominations each at this year’s British Academy Television Awards.
Its reality show Gogglebox, which films households watching television at home, has been nominated for two Baftas.
Southcliffe is nominated in the mini-series category and also received nods for Sean Harris for leading actor, Rory Kinnear for supporting actor and Shirley Henderson for supporting actress. The IT Crowd’s Richard Ayoade and Chris O’Dowd are both up for male performance in a comedy, and will compete with Matthew Baynton and James Corden, stars of The Wrong Mans.
The IT Crowd’s Katherine Parkinson is nominated for female performance in a comedy, while the show will compete for situation comedy alongside Count Arthur Strong, Toast of London and Him & Her: The Wedding. Gogglebox has been nominated for best reality and constructed factual show, as well as the audience award.
Helena Bonham Carter and Dominic West were nominated in the leading actress and actor categories respectively for their portrayal of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in BBC drama Burton and Taylor.
They face competition from stars including Jamie Dornan, for BBC2’s The Fall, and Olivia Colman, for ITV’s Broadchurch.
The winners of the Arqiva British Academy Television Awards will be announced at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on May 18.
