American film star Christian Slater is joining the radio cast of the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy

The 35-year-old plays John Watson, known as Wonko The Sane, in the final instalment of the Radio 4 production.

The series, which begins next month, marks a full circle return for the sci-fi adventure.

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy began life as a radio broadcast in 1978, before becoming a massive hit.

Author Douglas Adams's voice will also be heard in the Radio 4 adaptation.

He recorded the part of Agrajag at his home studio 18 months before his sudden death in 2001.

The series comes as fans prepare for the movie version of the sci-fi adventure.

The movie, which stars The Office actor Martin Freeman as hero Arthur Dent, the baffled Englishman in space, will hit the big screen later this month.

Slater, who recently performed in a West End production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, will join the likes of Simon Jones and Mark Wing-Davey from the original radio line-up, on Radio 4 on June 21.
