Elton wins libel damages

Sir Elton John was yesterday awarded undisclosed libel damages and a public apology from the Sunday Times after the newspaper claimed he had behaved in an arrogant manner at his annual charity ball.

The report, last June, carried an allegation that Sir Elton issued an edict that guests at his White Tie and Tiara ball should not address him unless spoken to.

The ball raises at least £3million a year for the Elton John Aids Foundation.

The High Court in London heard the story had caused him 'considerable distress'.
