The voice winner Jermain Jackman has insisted he will use his new fame to help youngsters in Hackney — and revealed his ambition to be the “first singing black Prime Minister”.

The 19-year-old, who is from Hackney, is the area’s Labour Party Youth Coordinator. He claims its young people work twice as hard as those from more privileged boroughs.

He said: “I saw how the Olympics inspired a generation and music inspired another generation. That whole concept of how young people can be motivated off the back of another person — that motivates me. There is a lack of opportunities in Hackney.

“There are less opportunities than you would have in say, Kensington and Chelsea. If you’re a young person in Hackney you have to work twice as hard to be able to get somewhere and I wanted to make it clear that I’ve worked hard in order to achieve my goals.

“And no goal is too far-fetched. I want to be the first singing black Prime Minister.”
