This Polish-born artist was one of the last great European Expressionists, who found his inspiration not in France but in neighbouring Belgium, from where he was forced to flee as the Nazis approached.

He ended up in Britain, settling for a while in a Welsh mining village where he created the potent, deeply felt images of landscape and toil that first won him praise.

This full retrospective pays tribute to the spirit and mastery of a true artist.

Sun 4-Sat 31 Jul, Flowers East, 82 Kingsland Road, E2 (020-7920 7777).
