Gleaming white in the sunshine, it is a reminder of a bygone age.

Keira Knightley looks smouldering as she prepares to light up

Eerily reminiscent of Katharine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story, the 22-year-old effortlessly achieves the 1930s look in an elegant peep-hole costume.

Miss Knightley plays Cecilia Tallis in Atonement, director Joe Wright's adaptation of Ian McEwan's best-selling novel about a young woman's innocent summertime frolic on her family's country estate.

It has been heralded as the big British period drama of the year and will feature as the opening-night film of next week's 75th anniversary Venice Festival.

There are already murmurings that the movie - which also stars James McAvoy - could be an Oscar hopeful.
