Sheridan Smith plays the pretty, Californian rich girl Elle Woods who transforms her life and expectations with positive drive.

But after the premiere of Legally Blonde at the Savoy Theatre last night, Smith, 28, admitted: "I feel so lucky to be doing it I think I'm blagging.

"Every job I enjoy so much, I don't plan. You don't disappoint yourself if you don't reach out. If you're negative, you can't go wrong."

Her co-star Duncan James, 31, formerly of boy band Blue, said he had been dreaming of doing a show like Legally Blonde since he was a toddler.

Former Doctor Who David Tennant and his actress girlfriend Georgia Moffett praised the show, which stars her father, Peter Davison as Professor Callahan. Tennant said the production was "strangely moving".

The audience also included Brenda Blethyn, Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs, Douglas Hodge, Neil Pearson, Graham Norton, Bob Geldof, Sian Phillips and Stephen Mangan.
