How cruel it is that at the time of year when we're supposed to be full of optimism and resolve, we have the worst weather and the shortest days.

These are the darkest months. A membership application form for a gym sits on the table unfilled, a fitness video remains in its shiny new box unviewed.

The Latin bar Salsa! has the perfect solution for all these blues, with a new programme of dancing lessons that should help to keep your sebaceous borders at bay.

It's so much more fun than the gym and you can have a drop of the hard stuff to lubricate your paces (dang, there goes another resolution).

And it means that smoking is quite tricky too, for those of you who've just given up the weed. It opens at 6.30pm every weekday night for beginners' salsa and later classes include salsa for advanced levels, synchronised salsa, Brazilian dance, lambada and merengue.

Costs start at around £5 per hour, with good deals on buying two-hour sessions. Curiously, the Wednesday-night classes (which start at 7.30pm) for absolute beginners are free. Booking isn't required for any of the classes, but it's worthwhile calling ahead for full details on each particular day's activities.

Salsa! 96 Charing Cross Road, WC2 (Tel: 020-7379 3277).
