Noel Gallagher was backed by strings and a choir as he performed a host of Oasis's best known hits at the Royal Albert Hall, saying he was saving his new material.

Going solo: Noel Gallagher played at the Royal Albert Hall

Gallagher has been keeping a low profile since Oasis split last summer.

But last night he played the first of two headline concerts for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The star was joined on stage by the Crouch End Festival Choir and musicians Wired Strings, both of whom performed with Gallagher before.

Many audience members at the plush venue stayed on their feet throughout the night as Gallagher, who according to reports is expecting to become a father again, played Cast No Shadow, Slide Away, and crowd favourite Wonderwall.

The singer, who made several quips as he sat in the middle of the stage with a guitar, brought the night to a climax with Don't Look Back In Anger.

During the gig he joked: "If you're thinking this is exactly the same set that you played two years ago - it is.

"But I'm wearing different clothes."

Reacting to the audience at one point, Gallagher joked: "Play you a new song? No, we don't do new songs for charity."

He asked one audience member if they were American, and when they replied they were from Liverpool, Mancunian Gallagher said: "Try and be American, it's better than being a Scouser."
