News of the wedding - confirmed by the 39-year-old American actor at the Tony Awards - comes two months before the British-born star, 40, is due to give birth to the couple's first child.

According to friends close to the couple, they will have a second, more lavish ceremony later in the year.

Here's looking at you kid: The intensely private couple turn the lens on the paparazzi

"Both Naomi and Liev are intensely private people and wanted a very private, personal wedding," said a source close to the King Kong star.

"They decided relatively recently that they wanted to be married before the birth, in keeping with their traditional, family-centred backgrounds.

"Nothing's been confirmed, but they've discussed the possibility of having a far more lavish do in the wintertime, or even early next year, where everyone can let their hair down and toast their nuptials in style."

Miss Watts, who grew up in Shoreham in Kent and the Welsh island of Anglesey before moving to Australia at the age of 14, met Schreiber on the set of The Painted Veil.

In the film, based on Somerset Maugham's acclaimed novel, they play lovers.

Since getting together, the pair have been reluctant to give joint interviews and have refused to reveal the gender, or any possible names, of their baby.

Talking about her reluctance for fame, Miss Watts - who previously dated Australian star Heath Ledger - said: "All this stuff, the raised expectations, the impossibility of privacy, is still unknown to me.

"I'm less familiar with it and it's kind of frightening."
