Puss in Boots - Shrek's swashbuckling feline friend - has been voted the Best Movie Animal.

The ferocious cat, voiced by Spanish-born heart-throb Antonio Banderas in Shrek 2, has beaten two dogs, a walrus and camel to the title.

Other animals in the short-list, for the Total Film magazine poll, include the fat dog from Belleville Rendez-vous, a French cartoon about cycle racing.

Botok, the baby camel in The Story of the Weeping Camel, and the vomiting walrus from the Drew Barrymore comedy 50 First Dates are also on the list.

Baxter, the pet dog in the Ben Stiller comedy Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, also has a place on the short-list.

But diminutive sword-fighting assassin Puss in Boots clawed to victory with 94percent of the vote.

Total Film magazine editor Matt Mueller said: "Puss in Boots is this wonderful character, which really made Shrek 2.

"He was fantastic in the film. Puss in Boots had all the best lines."

The awards, voted for by 10,000 readers, are published in the new edition of Total Film magazine.
