Rod Stewart has filed for divorce from his estranged wife Rachel Hunter, setting up a likely spring wedding next year to fiancee Penny Lancaster.

The 60-year-old cited irreconcilable differences in Los Angeles.

Friends of his wife said she was 'stunned' to have the tables turned on her.

Miss Hunter, 35, withdrew the divorce application she made in 2003 and has yet to follow up her threat to pursue Stewart for up to half of his £100million fortune.

The singer is said to have taken the step 'to get on with his life'.

The couple, who have two children, married in 1990 but split in 1999.

Last week, it was revealed that Miss Lancaster, 34, is expecting a child by Stewart.

He already has six children by four women.
