The trailer for Scream VI has just been released and fans of the 90s horror franchise are in for a treat.

The sequel is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busicklooks, and looks at the survivors of the original killings attempting to start new lives.

After leaving the town of Woodsboro, the group settle in New York hoping to leave behind the horrors of their ordeal.

The last instalment was a huge success at the box office and the franchise has amassed more than $740 million (£598 m) at the box office.

The Paramount film will be officially released in cinemas early next year, but what can we expect from this latest instalment?

Scream VI trailer

The one-minute teaser trailer features Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barerra, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding.

It clips to a group of people in the Big Apple, presumably celebrating Halloween, as they make their way to the subway.

A number of people in the carriage are in an array of costumes and masks all having a good time.

But the mood quickly shifts as the carriage fills with menacing characters in Ghostface masks - a hallmark of the Scream franchise.

And in a riff on the famous tagline for Alien, the words, “In a city of millions, no one hears you scream” are overlaid as Ghostface appears and stifles a woman’s yell for help.

Which original castmates feature in Scream VI?

After various teases and hints in recent months, Scream veteran Courteney Cox will return to the role of news reporter Gale Weathers.

Melissa Barerra and Jenna Ortega will return as sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter.

Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding will also be reprising their roles as Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin, alongside Hayden Panettiere returning to the role of Kirby Reed.

Original franchise writer and creator Kevin Williamson returns as executive producer.

Who won’t be returning to Scream VI?

The franchise’s original scream queen Neve Campbell will not be returning as Sidney Prescott.

Her absence in the slasher film came down to the actress not being happy with her offer by the studio.

Speaking to People magazine, Campbell said: “Sadly, I won’t be making the next Scream film. As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”

She added: “It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you.”

Scream VI will be released in cinemas on March 10, 2023.
