There was no long lie-in for Shattered winner Clare Southern yesterday. Having gone a week with very little sleep to scoop the £97,000 prize in Channel 4's reality show, the 19-year-old was woken at 10am on advice of doctors.

The exhausted trainee police officer beat the remaining contestants - psychiatrist Jonathan Wood and student Chris Wandel - in the final 'sleep off' on Saturday.

The three climbed into bed in darkened rooms, knowing the last to nod off would be declared the winner.

Clare lasted 90 minutes while the men dropped off after 29.

'I didn't think I would last a second as soon as I hit the bed but, for some reason, I just seemed to wake up,' said Clare, from Poole, Dorset.

Media watchdog Ofcom is investigating the show following complaints from viewers that it endangered contestants' health.
