He is not known for his singing, and Warwick Davis has admitted he “probably shouldn’t audition for The X Factor” as he prepares for his West End debut.

The 43-year-old actor best known for his film roles in Return of the Jedi and the Harry Potter series, has joined the cast of Monty Python musical Spamalot as King Arthur’s assistant, Patsy.

He said: “I can’t believe this will be my West End debut, but I’ve just never had the opportunity before.

“I wouldn’t class myself as a singer, but I can hold a note and I understand musical timing. Like a lot of people, when you sing in the shower to yourself you sound great.

“If it came to something like The X Factor, I probably shouldn’t audition. But the musical director says he’s happy, and it’s all about confidence. It’s about taking a leap of faith.”

The star, 3ft 6ins tall and not afraid to poke fun at himself, having starred in Ricky Gervais’s mockumentary Life’s Too Short, added: “I feel so welcomed by everyone here. It’s a bit like joining a new school part-way through a new term.”

Davis’s dwarfism is caused by a rare genetic condition, which he said gives him aches and pains. He revealed: “My condition makes things a little bit harder. If I’m doing choreography I will feel it the next day. But that’s just the way life is.”

He will be playing alongside his Life’s Too Short co-star Les Dennis. The comic took up the role of King Arthur at the Playhouse Theatre last month.

The current run, dubbed the Summer of Charity Spamalot Gods, also features footage of different celebrities in the role of God each week, including Barbara Windsor, Christopher Biggins and Larry Lamb, with their fee going to their nominated charities.
