X Factor finalist Sam Callahan has broken his silence on his relationship with fellow contestant Tamera Foster, confirming they are “more than just friends”.

The pair may be out of this weekend’s grand final, but their burgeoning romance has been a rare highlight of what critics have called one of the most boring series to date. Despite Callahan, 19, of Essex, being voted out in week six and Foster, 16, from Kent, leaving in week eight, the couple are being tipped as most likely to succeed post-X Factor.

Callahan said: “I am really close to Tamera. We are more than just friends. I’m seeing her later — we’ve got lots of events we want to go to together. We were mates, we were really close and used to talk a lot, then we just got closer.”

Speaking at Hard Rock Cafe’s Fight For Life party, he said he is planning to release an album after teaming up with manager John McLaughlin, who is credited with discovering Busted and McFly: “I’ve had a few weeks out [of The X Factor] and I’ve managed to get in the studio to do more on my album, which I’d like to get out next year.”

Callahan went to Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided against a stage career: “I’d had enough by the end of school.

It was a great experience and taught me a lot. But by 13 I was writing my own music and that’s what I wanted to go into.”
