Frankie Howerd's wig has been exhumed to become a star attraction at a new museum full of offbeat mementos to the late comedian.

The hairpiece was buried as a shrine to the comic at his home in Cross, Somerset. But Howerd's former nurse, Chris O'Byrne, recovered it.

Nearly 5,000 items of Frankie paraphernalia will go on show for 28 open days at Wavering Down House in the village on March 26.

Visitors can marvel at receipts from some of his outrageous sprees - including an £87,000 bill for the six-week cruise he took six months before he died in 1992. 'He was a great hoarder,' said Mr O'Byrne.

'There are some of Frankie's childhood toys and gifts from stars such as Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and Grace Kelly.'
