A Dutch treat for Shearer

14 April 2012

Alan Shearer once again came to Newcastle's rescue as they staged a UEFA Cup fightback in Heerenveen.

Newcastle were trailing to Klaas Jan Huntelaar's 24th-minute strike and getting nowhere fast when the 34-year-old collected Patrick Kluivert's pass and smashed in a 69th-minute equaliser. Lee Bowyer snatched victory eight minutes from time with a deft back-heel before being sent off for a second bookable offence.

Middlesbrough also moved closer to a place in the last 16 with a 2-2 draw against Austrian champions Grazer AK at the Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadium. Boro twice led through goals from Boudewijn Zenden and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. The Austrians hit back on each occasion but ended the game with 10 men after star striker Roland Kollman was sent off.
