Double world champion Mark Williams suffered one of the most humiliating defeats of his snooker career when he crashed out during qualifying for the Welsh Open.

The 33-year-old, who dropped out of the world's top 16 last year but is provisionally ranked at No12, was beaten 5-1 by provisional world No50 David Gilbert.

Williams said: "He was excellent. I can't be too disappointed because I didn't get into the match." Gilbert, who has never been beyond the last 32 of a ranking event, said: "If I play like I did here I'll be hard to beat."
