Athens fear for Denise

Denise Lewis faces Olympic heartbreak with injury threatening to rule her out of the Athens Games next month.

Lewis was named in the Great Britain team today for the Games which start on 13 August but her latest injury worry was revealed to be worse than first feared.

She now faces a race simply to be fit after aggravating a recurring foot problem while competing in the long jump at the Olympic trials in Manchester at the weekend.

Max Jones, UK Athletics performance director, said Lewis will not be able to train for at least two weeks because of ligament damage in her foot - a potentially calamitous blow after a season already disrupted by injuries.

"The injury is a bit worse than we we first thought," said Jones. "She's going to miss two weeks, resting and rehabilitating, and then she'll have a week's more training before she and coach Charles Van Commenee make their decision. Obviously, we're all very disappointed about this setback."

Lewis added: "I'll now enter a period of rehabilitation which will decide whether I'm able to compete at the Olympics."

Limping badly, Lewis prompted major concern when she was helped off the track by a physio after just three attempts at the long jump on Sunday as she competed in her fourth event of a busy weekend. Realistically, even if she makes it to Athens now, the 31-year-old, whose form has been disappointing of late, is unlikely to be in good enough shape to do herself justice as she defends her heptathlon crown.

Meanwhile, Darren Campbell's anxious 36-hour wait over Olympic selection ended when he was included in the Great Britain team for both the 100 and 200 metres.

The 200m silver medallist at the 2000 Games pulled out of the final of the longer sprint at the British trials in Manchester on Sunday after suffering a rib injury when he fell at the end of the 100m final.

But because he withdrew on the advice of UK Athletics' medical staff, the country's most consistent sprinter was included in the side for Athens announced by the British Olympic Association in London.

Jones added the door for further selection remains open until next Monday - meaning Malachi Davis, who has not been initially chosen, could still make the team.

Davis, the American who was issued with a British passport only last Thursday, has reached the required qualifying standard for the 400m but has been asked to prove his fitness at a meeting in Loughborough.
