This is the moment hundreds in Kenya celebrated Eliud Kipchoge becoming the first athlete to complete a marathon in less than two hours.

The Kenyan, from Kapsisiywa in the Nandi District of the country, crossed the line in a time of one hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds in Vienna.

The 34-year-old ran at an average pace of four minutes and 33.5 seconds per mile, using 36 pacemakers in alternating groups and a green laser projected onto the road representing 20 seconds below the two-hour pace.

"Today we went to the moon and came back to earth! I am at a loss for words for all the support I have received from all over the world," he said moments after achieving the feat.

"That was the best moment of my life. The pressure was very big on my shoulders. I got a phone call from the President of Kenya. I am the happiest man today."

He added: "We can make this world a beautiful world and a peaceful world. The positivity of sport. I want to make it a clean sport and an interesting sport."

Kipchoge's feat sparked jubilant scenes in his home nation as traffic was brought to a standstill in the capital city Nairobi by the celebrations in front of a giant screen.

"Hearty congratulations, Eliud Kipchoge," president Uhuru Kenyatta said in a statement soon after.

"You've done it, you've made history and made Kenya proud. Your win today will inspire future generations to dream big and aspire to greatness. We celebrate you and wish you God's blessings.
