Barkley impresses in tour victory

British Columbia 19 England 41

Teenager Olly Barkley, who has yet to play a first-team game for his club Bath, was the success of England's latest tour win in Vancouver.

Barkley, 19, started in his normal position of fly-half before switching to emergency scrum-half after Scott Benton was injured. Clive Woodward, coaching a side shorn of their 18-strong Lions contingent, said: 'Olly did unbelievably well. He said he could play scrum-half and he was superb.'

Injuries to Benton, lock Alex Brown and centre Joe Ewens on a rock-hard ground marred a win which saw Fraser Waters (two), Andy Hazell, David Rees, Trevor Woodman and Tom Palmer touch down. 'Our defence was awesome,' said Woodward. 'I'm very proud of them.

'Steve White-Cooper had a huge game, as did Alex Sanderson and David Rees. And it is difficult to believe that Tom Voyce is still only 20.' Barkley said: 'I was a bit anxious at the start, but once we got into it I started to feel a bit easier.'

ENGLAND (v Canada, 2nd Test at Burnaby on Saturday): Lewsey; Sampson, Lloyd, Noon, Stephenson; D Walder, Bracken (captain); Rowntree, West, White, Shaw, Kay, Corry, Moody, Worsley.
