Blow to New York Olympic bid

Inspectors from the International Olympic Committee arrived in New York today with the Americans in disarray over their plans to build a new $1.4billion Olympic stadium on Manhattan's west side.

Neighbourhood protests and a rival redevelopment bid from the owners of Madison Square Garden, who are fearful of losing events to the new complex, have stopped the stadium project from receiving final approval from politicians.

The IOC evaluation commission left London yesterday after giving the capital a boost by saying how impressed they were with plans to stage the 2012 Games here.
