Jack Catterall has confirmed talks for a much-anticipated rematch with Josh Taylor are underway.

The ‘Tartan Tornado’ retained his undisputed super-lightweight WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring belts after a hugely controversial split-decision victory in February 2022.

Many onlookers felt Catterall had done enough inside Glasgow’s Hydro Arena, having knocked the champion down in round eight.

Judge Howard Foster did score the bout 113-112 in Catterall’s favour, but the other two cards on the night backed the champion, 114-111 (Ian John-Lewis) and 113-112 (Victor Loughlin).

The result was investigated by the British Boxing Board of Control and John-Lewis was eventually downgraded from an A Star Class to an A Class Official.

Taylor has since lost to Teofimo Lopez and hinted his days at 140lbs are over, while Catterall has eased to unanimous decision wins against Darragh Foley and Jorge Linares in a bid to build himself back up into the title picture.

Catterall has since left promotional company BOXXER since talks were first mooted in order to join Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom and has confirmed to Betway that discussions for a rematch are underway.

“I believe they are in discussions right now,” he said.

“Matchroom have been speaking with Top Rank so there is an ongoing discussion. I’m not sure how far they are with the negotiation, but it is something we are entertaining for the moment, but we are not going to put all our eggs in that one fight.

“But the fans want it and it will be a big domestic fight the fans will love but in a couple of weeks we know what direction we will be going in.”
