British duo make the top 10 in Barcelona

13 April 2012

British divers Mark Shipman and Tony Ally both finished in the top 10 in the final of the men's 3metre individual springboard at the world diving championship in Spain.

Shipman and Ally finished 9th and 10th respectively thanks to some of the best diving the pair have ever produced against a quality field in Barcelona.

As both divers made the top 12 in the world rankings, Britain will have two places in the 3m event at next year's Olympic Games in Athens.

Shipman, whose previous best finish in a world championship was 14th, said: "That was unbelievable, to go top 10 in the world and qualify Britain for the Olympics.

"It just shows the standard of diving in the world as well as in Britain has been getting better and better."

Ally added: "World diving has just moved up another gear and the British are up there with the rest."

Russia's Alexander Dobroskok took the gold medal.
