Broad called up as duo return home

12 April 2012

Leicestershire fast bowler Stuart Broad has been called into England's Commonwealth Bank Series squad for the best-of-three finals against Australia.

Broad has been at the MRF pace bowling foundation in Chennai and is set to arrive in Australia on Thursday with Jon Lewis (Achilles) and Chris Tremlett (back) returning to the UK.

The 20-year-old will effectively be available for the first game against Ricky Ponting's Australians at the 95,000-capacity MCG on Friday.

Injuries have plagued England's triangular tournament, with Kevin Pietersen forced home with a broken rib and James Anderson told to rest his troublesome back ahead of the World Cup.

Coach Duncan Fletcher told BBC Radio Five Live: "Chris has got a back injury that will definitely prevent him taking any further part in the finals.

"Jon Lewis was one of those ones where we were not prepared to risk it with injuries to the bowlers, Jimmy Anderson being injured.

"We didn't want to risk it any further so he is going to go back. It's difficult at the moment to say what it is. It is around that Achilles area so they are going to go back and have a really good look at it in the UK."

Despite being overlooked for this campaign, Broad is in the reckoning for a World Cup spot.

He was two days into a 10-day programme in India, set up by England bowling coach Kevin Shine for those named for the A tour of Bangladesh.

Broad played a handful of one-day internationals against Pakistan last September but lost out to Tremlett in the selection stakes in Australia.
