Calzaghe calls in the heavies

David Smith14 April 2012

Joe Calzaghe believes the twin attributes of speed and strength will establish him as a two-weight world champion,

writes David Smith.

Calzaghe's 14th defence of the World Boxing Organisation's super-middleweight championship, secured with a seventh-round stoppage of Armenian challenger Mger Mkrtchian in Cardiff (above), could be his last appearance in the 12st division.

Calzaghe, frustrated by the lack of competition at super-middleweight, is looking to move up to light-heavyweight.

He said: "I'll be much stronger at light-heavyweight but I will carry the same hand speed with me. With the light-heavies being slower than super-middleweights, I should be able to achieve my ambitions."
