Capello wants a determined England

12 April 2012

New England manager Fabio Capello believes his biggest challenge is to restore the team's "determination".

Capello, who won numerous titles as a coach at AC Milan, Roma, Juventus and Real Madrid, spoke on Italian television station Rai Due on Sunday night.

"This is a big challenge and a difficult one for me," he said. "I will not guide a team on a weekly basis as you do at a club. The England national team seems to have lost the determination and grit that they had in the past."

He added: "Psychologically, they are a team that needs to find its confidence. I watched them play against Russia and they looked a very impersonal side when playing. It's a team that need to find itself and that will be my role."

Capello admits he is now facing new types of pressure as England manager.

"I have had the fortune to coach great players," he added. "But in this case there's a nation behind this role. We will have to create in a short time the right atmosphere and the right characteristics to get results.

"From tomorrow, I'll learn more English. The most important thing is to get to know the atmosphere. It's a difficult world out there, the tabloids are very aware of what goes on with the national coach, it's a delicate position and I will have to be very careful at all times.

"The most important thing is to be able to work and take this national team were it belongs. It would be the ultimate to win the World Cup and then retire."

Capello will be unveiled before the English media on Monday.
