Charlton sunk by Dutch double

13 April 2012

Charlton slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Uefa Cup hopefuls Roda in Holland - with two Addicks players limping out of the action.

Striker Matt Svensson limped out of the action early on following a seemingly inoccuous challenge.

Then midfielder Scott Parker's game was over after he was replaced following an accidental clash of heads with Sven Vandenbroeck.

Roda - who finished fourth in Holland's Eredivisie last year and will consequently compete in this season's Uefa Cup - created the best two chances of the first half before the break, with the lively Tom Soetaers involved in both.

After crossing for Van Dessell, who headed straight at Dean Kiely, Belgian Soetaers beat Addicks defender Mark Fish but shot into the side-netting.

Charlton started the second half brightly but were undone by two goals in three minutes.

Soetaers showed his class on the hour after new signing Luke Young surrendered possession on the edge of the Roda box. The Belgian evaded all challenges in a 60-yard run, which ended with a fierce shot which beat Kiely from the edge of the area.

Soon after the same player made it 2-0, shooting right-footed across the goalkeeper and into the net.

Jonatan Johansson pulled a goal back in the last minute of the game, receiving a through ball from substitute John Salako and advancing before beating the Roda keeper with a chip.
