Cole set to discover fate

12 April 2012

Ashley Cole is likely to find out on Wednesday if he faces a Football Association charge for aiming a two-finger salute at Arsenal fans.

The FA have confirmed they are examining all available evidence before deciding whether to take disciplinary action over Sunday's alleged incident.

Photographs appeared to show Chelsea defender Cole making the gesture after the final whistle of his side's 1-0 Barclays Premier League defeat at Emirates Stadium, with reports claiming it was directed at Gunners supporters who had jeered him throughout the match.

Referee Alan Wiley did not include the incident in his post-match report so the FA turned to other evidence, including photographic and video material.

Chelsea boss Avram Grant does not feel his player has done anything worthy of punishment.

"I don't think he made that reaction," said Grant.

England left-back Cole, 26, was also involved in an ugly incident at the final whistle on Sunday, grabbing Cesc Fabregas after being the victim of a late challenge by the Arsenal midfielder.

Fabregas picked up a yellow card - one of nine during Arsenal's win - but Cole was not cautioned by Wiley.

Cole made an acrimonious departure from Arsenal in August last year and has since criticised the Gunners in his autobiography.

Sunday's game was the first time the England defender has returned to the home of his former club.
