Australia coach Tim Nielsen quits

I quit: Tim Nielsen
10 April 2012

Australia coach Tim Nielsen quit his job today less than an hour after his team drew the Third Test in Sri Lanka to clinch the series 1-0.

The 43-year-old has been in charge since 2007 but has overseen a decline in the team's fortunes and they are now No4 in the Test rankings. He lost five of his 15 Test series including two Ashes contests.

Cricket Australia said today: "Tim has been national coach during a period in which we have had a long list of great champions leave the game and has been a strong support for new players coming into the side over that period.

"We encouraged him to apply for the redesigned head coach role that the CA board approved after the tabling of the Australian Team Performance Review. However, we have spoken to Tim and understand and respect his decision to now begin a new chapter in his life."
