England can win Champions Trophy, says Owais Shah

10 April 2012

Owais Shah believes England can now go all the way in the Champions Trophy after ripping up the form book.

Shah was part of a batting unit which blitzed South Africa at Centurion yesterday to become the first team through to the last four.

He struck half of England's 12 sixes in making 98, while Middlesex team-mate Eoin Morgan weighed in with five.

"The team is confident right now," Shah said, following the 22-run win. "We are in the semi-final and one game away from the final.

"You always enter a competition to win it and the way we are playing at the moment I don't see why we can't go all the way.

"We have to make sure we beat New Zealand tomorrow and keep that momentum going."

The final Group B game against the Black Caps at the Wanderers is a dead rubber for England, who will wait until tomorrow to assess whether wicketkeeper Matt Prior is fit to play after a virus.

Nothing, however, appears able to dampen the mood in the camp. The recent run of wins has proved quite a contrast to the 6-1 hammering England received from Australia earlier this month.

"Leading up into the tournament we had a very poor series against Australia and to get into the semi-finals is a great achievement," said Shah.

"We had a pool session this morning and all the guys were still talking about last night.
"We can't wait to see who we will play in the semis."

On a personal note, Shah's first half-century in 10 one-day international innings has relieved pressure on his place.

"I have always had belief in my own ability and I know what I am capable of doing," he added.

"It's just about doing it when it matters and I did that yesterday."
