The day before England’s tour of Sri Lanka was due to start with the first of five one-day internationals, the whole outfield at Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium was covered after another burst of the rain that has disrupted the tourists’ preparations.

Sri Lanka’s final training session was disrupted but, with the weather set to improve, Eoin Morgan’s England team, who opted to train under lights, were expected to be able to practise.

They lost one of their two warm-up matches to the weather — winning another rain-disrupted game by eight wickets — as persistent rain has followed them from Colombo to Dambulla.

Better weather is forecast for Wednesday, with play due to begin at 10am UK time.

But the outfield was on Tuesday sodden after steady rain in the area on Monday, and another long burst this morning.

The stadium is also hosting the second ODI on Saturday.
