England batsman Jason Roy is carrying a wrist injury that required an injection prior to the one-day series with Sri Lanka.

The opener had to miss a match for Surrey against Somerset last month after having the treatment and although he made a successful return to cricket thereafter, England are monitoring the condition closely.

Standard Sport understands England and Roy are confident they can manage the problem but it is a cause for concern because the 25-year-old is a key part of the team’s plans in 50-over and Twenty20 cricket.

England rely on Roy and opening partner Alex Hales to give their innings a lightning start. While he is not always consistent, Roy’s knock of 78 from 44 balls in the World Twenty20 semi-final against New Zealand was one of the best of the tournament.

Roy also made a 50-over century against Pakistan in Dubai last year and his strike rates - 97 runs per 100 balls in 50-over cricket, 133 in Twenty20 - make him a dangerous customer. He is also a fine fielder.

Roy is expected to take his place at the top of the order at Edgbaston tomorrow, when England will attempt to move ahead in the five-match series after a thrilling tie in the opener at Trent Bridge.

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews is struggling to be fit for the match after damaging a hamstring in Nottingham.
