England have beaten New Zealand to win the Cricket World Cup in one of the most extraordinary sporting finales of all time.

After both sides scored 241 from 50 overs, a sudden death super over was introduced to decide the winner.

England’s score of 15 was enough to seal the trophy for the first time, sparking jubilant celebrations around Lord’s.

England were all but out of the game at 86 but were hauled back into it by the batting of Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler.

An exhausted Stokes told Sky Sports: "I'm pretty lost for words. All that hard work for four years and now to be stood here as champions of the world, it's an amazing feeling.

"Playing against New Zealand is always tough, they're a seriously good team. We had some luck at times and I said to Kane (Williamson) that I will be apologising for what happened for the rest of my life."

Archer said: "I was pretty sure I'd bowl the over but I just had to double check. It would have been disappointing if we didn't win as this is a great group."
