Ian Bell recalled to ODI squad as rain-soaked third Test ends in draw

11 June 2012

England have recalled Ian Bell to the one-day squad for the upcoming series against West Indies in place of the retired Kevin Pietersen.

The Warwickshire batsman is the only player in the 14-man party for the three match ODI series who was not involved in England's most recent 4-0 series victory over Pakistan in February.

National selector Geoff Miller said: "We are anticipating a very competitive NatWest series against West Indies and are looking to continue to build on the progress we made in limited overs cricket earlier this year against Pakistan.

"Kevin Pietersen's recent decision to retire from one-day cricket means we now start looking at other options available to us as we prepare to defend our ICC World Twenty20 title and look towards next year's ICC Champions Trophy and the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup."

Meanwhile, the rain-ravaged third Investec Test between England and West Indies concluded as a draw, after a third washout in five days was confirmed at Edgbaston.

Umpires Tony Hill and Kumar Dharmasena announced the inevitable abandonment this afternoon, after yet more bad weather in Birmingham.

The square remained under full cover throughout as forecast rain simply became heavier, and the final-day crowd amounted to barely double figures.

This match, already shorn of its first two days by persistent rain, had appeared destined for a stalemate in any case today - irrespective of the elements.

England, who closed last night on 221 for five in reply to the tourists' 426, established a 2-0 series lead with victories at Lord's and Trent Bridge and therefore already had the Wisden Trophy in the bag.
