Ireland stun England in World Cup

Over and out: Niall O'Brien prepares to catch Kevin Pietersen today, ending the England opener's hopes of getting his first ton in more than a year

Kevin O'Brien struck the fastest century in World Cup history to inspire Ireland to a shock win over England.

O'Brien launched an astonishing counter-attack to keep his side in the today's World Cup Group B match after they were reduced to 111-5 in an apparently vain pursuit of 327 for eight under lights at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

But O'Brien responded with a stunning century from just 50 balls as he and Alex Cusack (47) carried their team to the brink of an unlikely win.

O'Brien's innings ended when he was run-out on 113 but Trent Johnston and John Mooney saw them home for a famous three-wicket victory.
