Michael Vaughan looking forward to role as Yorkshire mentor

10 April 2012

Michael Vaughan has already caused a minor stir this year by stating his preference that only English-born players represent his country.

There was a mixed reception for Vaughan's remarks, after a generation of South Africa-born England players have found their way into the Test and one-day international teams.

This summer, though, he has a chance to do his bit for homegrown talent - as mentor for new Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale and a young squad of great potential.

It appears to be a challenge the 2005 Ashes-winner is relishing too, as he tries to identify his niche following retirement at the age of 34.

Vaughan, who will combine his role at Headingley with other interests inside and outside cricket, said: "We have a young team.

"What excites me is that we've got a lot of good English players.

"We have a number pushing for England honours. Andrew Gale is captain of the (England) Lions; there's Adil Rashid, Ajmal Shazhad, Tim Bresnan, Jonny Bairstow, Adam Lyth, David Wainwright, Joe Sayers."

These are riches indeed, each of the above either already appears in England squads or are on the radar.

For Vaughan, it is a source of significant extra enthusiasm and motivation.

"We've got a number of good English players, and I believe that's what county cricket is about. You want to win, but we've got to be providing England with players with good mentality, good experience - and if I can help in any way just passing on my experience then I'll be doing that."
