Cricket referee Andy Pycroft commandeered an airport toilet to remind Kevin Pietersen to be a gentleman if he disagrees with an umpire’s verdict in the future.

The batsman was seething after his dismissal in the third one-dayer against India at Ranchi on Saturday. He was clearly not out and umpire

S Ravi’s decision sparked the collapse which led to England falling 2-1 down in the five-match series. Pycroft caught up with Pietersen and coach Ashley Giles at Ranchi airport as both sides prepared to fly to Chandigarh for Wednesday’s fourth game.

Giles said: “It was in the gents! That was nice for my first meeting with the match referee.

“Andy was right to speak to Kev but I think common sense prevailed. It was just a little word.

“It’s tough for the umpires here, it’s so loud that decision making is tough. We understand that. I didn’t think it was a reaction, more disappointment from Kev. But we’ve got to be careful with reactions to decisions.”

Giles could make changes but will not be able to call on Stuart Broad after the bowler was prevented from flying back to India by snow at Heathrow.

“Changes are something that myself, Alastair Cook and the coaches will talk about,” said Giles.

- Ireland will play a two-match one-day series with Pakistan on May 23 and May 26.
