Davenport and Serena progress

Lindsay Davenport moved through when Czech Daja Bedanov retired with heat exhaustion when trailing 6-1, 4-1.  

Serena Williams, who wrapped up the Indian Wells crown last week despite a hostile crowd, followed her elder sister, Venus, into the third round with a 6-1 6-4 victory over Bulgarian Pavlina Nola.

Seventh seed Elena Dementieva advanced to the third round when American Alexandra Stevenson retired in the second set with a lower back injury with the Russian 6-2 2-0 ahead.

Japan's Ai Sugiyama also cried off with a sprained wrist while trailing Lisa Raymond 6-1 4-0.

Spanish veteran Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, the ninth seed, was also a winner - 6-2 2-6 6-0 - over German Barbara Rittner.
