Dein: We're under fire from Roman's tank

14 April 2012

David Dein spelt out the threat that bigspending Chelsea pose to Arsenal when the Highbury vice chairman said: "Roman Abramovich has parked his Russian tank in our front garden and is firing £50 notes at us."

Dein was in Monaco for the Champions League draw and believes Arsenal - who face Internazionale, Dynamo Kiev and Lokomotiv Moscow - can triumph in Europe. He said: "Our domestic form hasn't been too bad and the club is now seeded fifth in the whole of Europe so that means since Arsene Wenger arrived we've done exceptionally well. We have the squad to do well in Europe."

Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, whose side are paired with Glasgow Rangers, Panathinaikos and VfB Stuttgart, said: "It's a great draw. I was half expecting to get a Scottish team, but also not expecting it to happen. But it has. Alex McLeish is an old player of mine and has done a great job at Rangers."

Chelsea, who are 16-1 to win the competition, start their campaign at Sparta Prague on 16 September and John Terry today admitted Roman Abramovich's huge spending spree will raise expectations for Chelsea's Champions League campaign.

He said: "We are probably one of the teams everyone is keeping a close eye on in the Champions League.

"That is a big honour - but also a reminder of the challenge we face and the pressure is on us to deliver."
