Juan Martin Del Potro will not defend his US Open title this summer to give himself more time to recover from a wrist injury.

The Argentinian underwent surgery on his right wrist earlier this month and is keen not to rush back into action too soon.

"If all goes well, I'd return after the US Open," said the world number five on the BBC Sport website.

"The tournament is and always will be very special for me, all my life but I don't want to rush things."

Del Potro claimed a thrilling five-set win over Roger Federer at Flushing Meadows last year to claim his first grand slam title. But he has not played since going out in the fourth round at the Australian Open in January.

The Argentinian could now make his comeback at the Paris Open indoor tournament in November.
