Delay on Wiltord

Arsene Wenger admitted today that Arsenal have failed to reach an agreement with French striker Sylvain Wiltord about a new contract.

Wiltord has one year left on his present deal, but there has been little movement in talks aimed at keeping him at Highbury.

Wenger had hoped to complete a trio of agreements following the decisions of Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires to sign new contracts. "I was always confident they would," he said. "We wanted to make it a triple signing with Sylvain but at the moment it hasn't worked out.

"It is no closer with Sylvain yet. I am hoping something will be resolved but it is not done."

Wiltord is set to replace Fredrik Ljungberg, who is struggling with a shoulder injury, in midfield tomorrow when Arsenal face Everton at Highbury in their Premiership opener.
