Drogba warns Blues to raise their game

13 April 2012

Didier Drogba has told his Chelsea team-mates they will have to improve to make the Champions League quarter-finals.

They were disappointing as they were held to a goal-less draw at Olympiacos last night and the striker insists they will have to do better in the return leg at Stamford Bridge in two week's time.

The Athens game was Drogba's first for Chelsea since the African Nations' Cup and manager Avram Grant claimed it was the team's worst performance in Europe during his short reign.

But the striker hopes to have started to develop an understanding with new arrival Nicolas Anelka by the time they face the Greek side again. He said: "We had a difficult game and could have done better. The good thing is we have a second game at home but we have to improve.

"I am looking forward to playing with Anelka but I am just happy to be back and playing with my mates.

"I hope we can do great things but don't forget the other players. We have a big squad and I hope everyone will be committed and give everything."

Joe Cole, who struggled against the counter-attacking Olympiacos, added: "It was a very tactical game and we'll have to improve at the Bridge to get the job done, that's for sure. They are a good side and gave us a good run for our money. We look solid, everyone's doing their job tactically, but we need to start scoring. We want to get flowing again."

Chelsea are now nearly at full strength and Drogba admitted that "is a big problem for the manager" as he tries juggle his options. But goalkeeper Petr Cech insisted it will make the team much stronger, saying: "It's a really big boost to have a full squad. We can change the players around, we can use the whole squad and we have a lot of quality."
