Edwards leaves it late

13 April 2012

World champion Jonathan Edwards had to pull out all the stops to avoid a triple-jump defeat in Malmo last night.

Only 24 hours after winning at an international meeting in Gateshead, Edwards was losing to young Swede Christian Ohlsson, whose 17.19metre jump had given him the lead in the final round of the competition.

But the world record holder put everything into his own last jump and clinched a dramatic victory with a 17.33m effort.

Edwards said: "It was a very close competition and to come back the way I did obviously delighted me. It shows I'm still hungry for competition.

"I know I'm going through a very successful period but I'm not actually counting the number of victories I have achieved. "

Meanwhile, Maurice Greene will not compete in Friday's Brussels Golden League meeting because of a leg injury he sustained at the World Championships.
