Els leads as Ramsay misses cut

12 April 2012

Ernie Els reached the halfway point of the Verizon Heritage tournament in South Carolina with a three-stroke lead over American Jerry Kelly.

However, Scottish amateur Richie Ramsay failed to make the cut after a second-round one-under-par 70 meant he was three over for the tournament.

Two-time US Open champion Els, who missed the cut at last week's US Masters, fired a six-under-par 65 for the second straight day to move to 12 under.

Els carded a bogey-free round, which included six birdies, while Kelly had to settle for a 70 after conceding a bogey on his final hole.

Fred Funk matched his opening-round 67 and is tied for third with Australia's Stephen Leaney (68) at eight under.

Zach Johnson, the US Masters champion, carded a 68 to climb to four under for the tournament and is locked in a nine-way tie for 13th.
