England to have a say in Danny Cipriani's operation

Bad knock: Danny Cipriani dislocated his ankle last May
Chris Jones13 April 2012

Danny Cipriani and the London Wasps coaches will hold talks with England team manager Martin Johnson to decide when the fly-half should have surgery to remove a plate and pins from his ankle.

Cipriani dislocated his ankle last May and was forced off with an injury to the same area during the 34-3 win over Gloucester.

The 21-year-old needs the metalwork removed from his leg, but England have Tests in June against Argentina and will meet the Barbarians as a warm-up for those fixtures while further injury problems for the Lions could earn him a late call for the South Africa tour.

Ian McGeechan, Wasps director of rugby and Lions head coach, said: "We'll do purely what is the best for Danny and that will be done in conjunction with the club, not just England. It's got to be a medical decision over the timing of it."

Head coach Shaun Edwards said the injury was "not that serious" and added: "He's just rolled his ankle a little bit after someone fell on it."

Wasps finished seventh in the Premiership and will qualify for the Heineken Cup providing Bourgoin win the European Challenge Cup. The French side play Worcester in the semi-final on Saturday.

Iain Balshaw has joined the English exodus to France by signing a two‑year deal with Biarritz. The wing, who has 35 caps and helped England win the World Cup, leaves Gloucester after three seasons.

Saracens' 33-18 loss at Bath will be investigated by the independent citing officer after it featured a brawl between the packs at full-time. Former Australian lock Justin Harrison and captain Steve Borthwick were central to the incident ,which other players dismissed as "just a minor scuffle". As a result of other incidents, three Sarries players were sin-binned.
