England's hockey World Cup title bid ends in semis

England's gold medal hopes at the Hockey World Cup ended today as the lost 4-1 to Germany in the semi-finals in Delhi.

Having reached this stage for the first time in 24 years, England were 2-0 down after 11 minutes and although Richard Smith pulled one back, it proved in vain.

Germany will face either Australia or Holland in the final, with the losers playing England for the bronze.
